Title: Redeeming the time
Scripture Reading: Psalms 90:1
“Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations.”
Main idea: “Lord” (ho 136, adonay) occurs here. God is “the Lord of all, the ruler over all the world.” Moses acknowledges that from eternity past to eternity future God is God.
Our lives are so consumed with the temporary, with what matters today. We live in a culture that lauds pleasure in the moment. Moses didn’t have a physical home, so he looked up to the eternal God and said, “Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations.” Moses acknowledges that from eternity past to eternity future God is God.
For forty years in the wilderness, God’s people had no place to call home. Moses acknowledged that his soul rested in God, who was his true dwelling place. Generations come and go, but God is the one constant in the midst of uncertainty. Every person has only so much divinely allotted time during his stay on earth, an amount of time sovereignly determined by God. The message is clear: Redeem the time. This psalm 91 is a passionate plea, calling us to live every day with an eternal perspective. For all who trust in Christ and what he did at the cross, know this: pain, sorrow, trials, and trouble in this world are always temporary. As David testifies in Psalms 30:11, “You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; You have put off my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness.”
Application
When all sources of security in life have been stripped away we are able to see clearly the true source of security: “Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations.” Before there was a Temple, before there was a Davidic king on the throne, before Moses, before the mountains were created, before God made the earth, before everything, the Lord was there. He who is without beginning or end has always been God, and as God he has always been the source of our security. A day is coming when He will remove all your pain, sorrow, trials, and trouble. This eternal God is going to wipe every tear from your eyes (Rev 21:4). The eternal God of the universe loves you, and nothing can separate you from His love.
Let’s pray together
Heavenly Father, all things what we see on this earthy are temporary. All will go away one day. help us Lord focus our eyes and heart on eternal. In Jesus Name Amen.
