Title: A Glimpse of Heaven’s Glory

Scripture Reading: Mark 9:2
“Now after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John, and led them up on a high mountain apart by themselves; and He was transfigured before them.”

Main idea: The Transfiguration was a brief glimpse of Jesus’ true glory, a special revelation of His divinity.

“after six days”
i.e., six days after Peter’s confession and Christ’s first prediction of the passion and the resurrection. “After six days” is one of the most precise time references in the Gospel. This event took place when the disciples were still reeling from Jesus’ words about His passion (Mark 8:27-9:1). In Exodus 24:16, “six days” is also the period of preparation for receiving revelation and witnessing a vision of divine glory. The mention of the six days would be a reminder of the six days of creation. In this case, God’s power was being revealed in an undeniable way, as it had been in the days of creation.

“He was transfigured before them”
His humanity radiating his majesty as Son of God, the glory that will be fully and permanently revealed at his second coming (Mark 8:38; 13:26). (Greek “metamorphoo”) “changed in form.” Paul uses this Gk. verb to describe the present work of the Spirit in the inner life of the believer (Rom. 12:2; 2 Cor. 3:18). That work will be completed when this same Spirit gives “life to your mortal bodies” as when He raised Jesus from the dead (Rom. 8:11), and as here in Jesus’ momentary glorification. During His First Advent, the glory of Christ was veiled. He came in humiliation, a Man of Sorrows, and acquainted with grief. But one day He will return in glory. No one will mistake Him then. He will be the King of kings and Lord of lords.

Application
This Transfiguration event is a visible confirmation of what Jesus had just said concerning His “Father’s glory” (Mark 8:38). Since Scripture foretells that in the age to come the righteous will shine with God’s glory (Daniel 12:3; Matthew 13:43), Jesus’ Transfiguration is also a foreshadowing of the believers resurrection. The study of the transfiguration will strengthen the faith of the believer. And a strengthened faith will enable the believer to bear the cross of his own call.

Let’s pray together
Heavenly Father, I thank you for your word. Let each one of our faith be strengthened. In Jesus Name Amen.
