Title: The faithfulness of God
Scripture Reading: Psalms 119:90
“Your faithfulness endures to all generations; You established the earth, and it abides.”
Main idea: God’s faithfulness is a synonym for Scripture, meaning God is forever committed to keeping His promises through all generations.
The Psalmist’s Testimony
The psalmist had found in his life God to be faithful. He had cried out to the LORD in faith and was trusting the LORD to reach down to help him (Psalms 119:88). When his soul was fainting, he held fast to his conviction that God would keep His Word (Psalms 119:81) and He did. Through the power of His Word, the LORD delivered His faithful servant from despair. This Testimony of God’s faithfulness was more than simply his observation: it carried the power of the revived psalmist’s experience. The faithfulness of God is displayed not only in His Word but also in His works. It extends to all generations and is seen in the order and precision of nature. God is not affected by the lapse of ages; he is not only faithful to one man throughout his lifetime, but to his children’s children after him, and to all generations so long as they keep his covenant and remember his commandments to do them.
God’s faithfulness
God’s Word is faithful because He is faithful. We can trust the Word of God because we can trust the God of the Word. God is faithful, we can trust Him. Paul told Timothy, “It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him: if we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us: if we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself” (2 Tim. 2:11-13). Because God is faithful, we know that He will never desert us. Why will God strengthen and guard His own? Because He is faithful. Paul said, “The Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen and protect you from the evil one” (2 Thess. 3:3). Because God is faithful, the security of his own is absolutely assured.
God’s laws never fail
In the physical realm, the sun, moon, stars, and seasons are dependable because God is faithful. Likewise, in the spiritual realm God’s laws never change. Ezekiel wrote in the Old Testament, “The soul who sins shall die” (Ezekiel 18:4s). And Paul wrote in the New Testament, “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap” (Gal 6:7). God’s laws are steadfast because God is faithful.
Application
A Christian life begins; it continues on and on; and one day it will consummate in glory. Peter said that those despised and persecuted saints “are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time” (1 Peter 1:5). Our Lord is faithful; therefore His own are secure. The faithfulness of God—how wonderful is this truth! Let us thank God for it! Indeed, His “faithfulness is unto all generations.”
Let’s pray together
Heavenly Father, I thank you for your faithfulness. Because You’re faithful, we know that You will never forsake us. In Jesus Name Amen.
